RAFFIA

At the core of our creations lies an exceptional material: raffia. More than just a fiber, it embodies an artisanal and responsible production process, one that respects both resources and traditions.

Natural, authentic, and sustainable, raffia celebrates a territory, an ancestral craftsmanship, and a non-standardized approach to consumption. Each raffia creation tells a story—a story of preserved artistry and a commitment to a more conscious fashion.

Derived from the Raphia farinifera palm, native to Madagascar, raffia is much more than a simple plant fiber. It is both a renewable natural resource and a key element of local artisanal craftsmanship.

A SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE

Each year, raffia is harvested by hand, with only one-third of the leaves taken from the most mature palm trees. This traditional method helps preserve the tree while ensuring a responsible and sustainable production.

AN ALLY TO ITS ENVIRONNEMENT

Thriving in wetlands and marshy areas, raffia plays an essential ecological role: It stabilizes the soil and prevents erosion thanks to its deep roots. It aloso regulates humidity and protects biodiversity, providing a rich habitat for local wildlife.

A POSITIVE SOCIAL IMPACT

Raffia is at the heart of Madagascar’s artisanal economy. Its harvesting and processing provide a stable source of income for many rural communities. The art of raffia crochet preserves an ancestral craftsmanship while contributing to economic and social development.

A FIBER WITH EXCEPTIONAL QUALITIES

Raffia stands out for its unique properties, making it an outstanding material for fashion and home décor:

  • Durability & Strength – perfect for handcrafted creations that last.
  • Natural Lightness – offering both comfort and flexibility.
  • Authenticity & Unique Texture – giving every piece a natural and singular character.
  • Eco-Friendly – Biodegradable and renewable, raffia is part of a responsible and sustainable approach.

Once harvested, the raffia leaves are cut into thin strips. The extracted fibers are then sorted, washed, and sun-driedbefore being bundled together.

With its natural sand-beige color, raffia is easy to dye. The fibers are immersed in large pots of hot water, infused with natural pigments. Once dried, they reveal rich and vibrant hues.

Finally, the fibers are ready for crocheting, an ancestral craftsmanship entirely handmade. This delicate process requires patience and skill, making each piece unique and deeply rooted in Malagasy tradition.
